Frequently Asked Questions

About Natural Phocus

What makes Natural Phocus different from other wall art?
Natural Phocus is designed around a simple idea: the images we live with can shape how we feel. Each photograph is selected for its calming, restorative qualities, drawing on research into how nature supports attention, stress recovery, and emotional balance. We think of our work less as decoration and more as a quiet, everyday invitation to pause.

Is there research behind the idea that nature images can help?
Yes. Research in environmental psychology suggests that exposure to natural scenes, including photographs, can support recovery from stress and mental fatigue. For example, studies associated with Attention Restoration Theory have found that viewing nature scenes can help restore the capacity for focused attention. Our art is intended to support well-being in everyday spaces, but it is not a substitute for professional medical or mental health care.

Who takes the photographs?
Every image is photographed by Steve Austin, a psychology professor with training in behavioral neuroscience whose research focuses on stress regulation and the psychological effects of nature exposure.

Are your prints limited editions?
Natural Phocus pieces are open editions, which keeps them accessible for homes, offices, and shared spaces. Collectors seeking signed, limited edition fine art can explore Steve Austin Fine Art Photography.

Choosing Your Artwork

What is the difference between paper and canvas?
Paper prints are made on Somerset Velvet, a textured fine art paper with a soft, matte finish that renders fine detail beautifully. Canvas has a subtle woven texture and a more painterly, gallery-style presence. Both use the same archival inks.

What is the difference between a framed paper print and a framed canvas?
A framed paper print sits behind a white mat and protective acrylic in a traditional solid wood frame. A framed canvas is set within a floating frame, with a slim gap between the canvas and frame so the artwork appears to float. Both are available in black, white, or maple.

Why do sizes differ between images?
Each photograph is offered in sizes that match its original proportions, so the composition is never cropped or distorted. Some images are wider, others are closer to square.

How do I know what size to choose?
The Dimensions section on each product page lists the finished size of every option, including frames. As a general guide, artwork above a sofa or bed looks best when it spans about two-thirds of the furniture's width.

Will the colors match what I see on screen?
We calibrate our printing carefully, but every screen displays color slightly differently, so small variations between your screen and the finished piece are normal.
